In a sign of respect for the incredible job that Diego Simeone is doing at Atletico this season, Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets now considers Atletico Madrid their biggest rival for the league this season and not traditional rivals Real Madrid.
“As of now, I believe that Atletico is a much better team than Real Madrid. They keep getting better and better as time goes by, and every year they end up signing better players. I’ll think they will fight to win the title until the end of the season,” Busquets stated in an interview.
Busquets’ thoughts come just as Real Madrid remain two points behind Barcelona in the title race, led by Atletico with 47 points. Barcelona still has a game in hand, which could make them leapfrog Zinedine Zidane’s side.
The World Cup winner with Spain revealed that, even if winning football’s most important competition is out of this world, winning another trophy makes him even prouder.
“Winning the World Cup was awesome, but winning the Champions League at Wembley was incredible. I think that’s the title I love the most, because we played perfect football to win it. Of course, winning the treble and all six tournaments in 2009 are something special, but that Champions League win was outstanding,” the midfielder added.
Barcelona will be playing Athletic Bilbao for the second time in four days on Wednesday, when both sides clash in the first leg of the Copa del Rey Quarter finals.
