Santos Made Just €9m From Selling Neymar To Barcelona

neymar-barcelonaSome fascinating insight into the numbers behind the transfer of Neymar from Santos to Barcelona have been leaked to ‘Globo Radio’

According to the minutes of a Santos board meeting from 18 June, Barcelona paid €17 million to buy Neymar.

However, Santos received just €9.35 million of that, with the rest being divided between two companies that owned part of the players’ rights, DIS, which owned 40%, and Teisa, which owned 5%.

Keep in mind that from Barcelona’s side, the deal cost then €57m as they paid Neymar’s dad (also his agent) €40m in commission/agent fees. Barcelona had previously paid Neymar’s dad €10m in 2012 as an advance on his transfer.

So out of a €57m deal for one of the world’s best player, the selling club received only €9.35m of that €57m or 16.4%. That is crazy.

According to Globoesporte, Santos will receive an additional €2m if Neymar is named among the top three players in the world in the Ballon d’Or awards within the next five years. That seems a pretty sure bet.

In addition, the two clubs agreed to play two friendlies. The first is scheduled for 2 August at the Camp Nou, with Barça covering all of the Brazilian club’s travel costs.

The second will take place in Brazil between July and September of 2014. In the event that this game does not take place, Barça will have to pay Santos an extra €4.5 million, according to Radio Globo. As an aside, I wonder that if Barcelona will be playing a friendly in Brazil next summer, whether they will stop in the US for some tour games like they did in 2011?
