After an ill-fated preseason tour last year that took them to Australia and China, Real Madrid are returning to more familiar grounds this year with the news that the Spanish giants will be in the USA for their preseason this summer.
For five five consecutives years over the reigns of Mourinho (3) and Ancelotti (2), Madrid based their US camps on the west coast, but to cut down on travel this year, Real will stay on the east coast and play three matches in the International Champions Cup.
Three high profile friendlies for The Whites, but the biggest has to be the one on August 3 against former manager Carlo Ancelotti and his Bayern Munich side at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
With PSG and Bayern still in the Champions League hunt with Real, will we see a repeat of the Champions League final this sumner in the US?
Real Madrid USA Tour Schedule 2016
July 27: Real Madrid vs. PSG Columbus, Ohio
July 30: Chelsea vs. Real Madrid location TBD
Aug 3: Real Madrid vs. Bayern Munich East Rutherford, NJ
The potential fly in the ointment of Real Madrid’s preseason plans is that Real currently sit third in the league just two points ahead of fourth place Villareal. The two meet each other in Matchday 34 (weeekend of 19/20 April) at the Santiago Bernabeu.
That date could be important because of the unthinkable happens and Villareal overtakes Zinedine Zidane’s side, then Real will for forced to play in the final qualifying round of the Champions League, something that could impact the tour.
