Real Madrid Finally Lift La Liga Trophy 98 Days After Winning It

It one of the most unusual things about La Liga. That La Liga protocol dictates that the trophy for winning the league is only handed to the champions at the start of the following season.

So on Sunday, 98 days after winning the La Liga title, Real Madrid players were finally able to raise the trophy they had worked so hard for last season.

Sergio Ramos climbed the famous steps of the Bernabeu Stadium, for the first time as captain, accompanied by co-captain Marcelo he kissed the trophy before lifting it in a rather subdued manner before their league clash with Valencia.

The Madrid faithful didn’t seem to mind and were jumping up in joy as “champions” ringed around the Stadium. After such a long wait they were going to join in on the belated celebrations one way or another.

After briefly lifting the trophy Ramos and Marcelo, wearing their Madrid home strips, ran down the stairs to join the rest of the players on the pitch and parade the trophy before posing for a team photo.

Zinedine Zidane’s squad were joined by the Copa del Rey trophy they won from last season, the La Liga and this season’s European Super Cup, which they beat Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United to claim.

Oddly, there was no sight of the Champions League, which was the prize jewel from last season’s famous treble. Suppose it’s locked away in their prestigious and ever-growing museum.

Madrid pipped fierce rivals Barcelona to claim their first La Liga title in five years in the final game of last season with a 2-0 victory over Malaga to finish with 93 points from 38 games.
