Rafa Benitez: I’m Happy And Excited To Become The Real Madrid Boss

Rafa-BenitezNapoli coach Rafael Benitez is set to take charge at Real Madrid, with the club expected to officialy announce his new position on Wednesday.

According to Marca, the former Liverpool and Chelsea manager hopped onto a private jet from Naples to Madrid on Monday morning and gave a quick interview before he flew.

“I’m excited and very happy” said Rafa Benitez as he climbed into his car before admitting that he and Real Madrid “still have things to discuss”.

Asked whether this is the beginning of a dream, the Spaniard replied with a resounding “yes“. Despite winning ‘La Decima’ in 2014, Real Madrid sacked Carlo Ancelotti last week following a trophy-less season at the helm.

I honestly don’t get what Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez sees in Rafa. Since winning the FA Cup in 2006 while at Liverpool, Benitez has won the Europa League at Chelsea in 2013 and the Coppa Italia in 2014. I discount the trophies he won at Inter as he took over a team that had won the treble under Jose Mourinho the previous season and guided them to a 7th place finish before being fired midseason.

At Real, Rafa will be expected to win trophies every year, something he has not done in the last decade. His counter-attacking style is not how Ronaldo and Bale like to play. I just don’t see how going from Ancelotti to Rafa is a step forward for Real Madrid and not a step backwards.
