According to the radio program El Larguero on Spanish radio station Cadena Ser, Lionel Messi has agreed to extend his contract with Barcelona for an additional three years, with an option for a fourth year.
The new deal would go to 2021 as a minimum, meaning that Messi will tie himself to Barcelona until he is 34 or 35 years old and be worth €30 million a year after taxes. That is a sizeable pay raise for Messi who was making €22m a year after taxes on his current deal.
As reported by Cadena Ser, the new deal won’t be signed until after 30 June, for accounting reasons, with the related costs being booked next season.
A lot of credit has to be given to Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu and the Barca board. They have three of the top ten players in the world on Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez, and yet over the last year or so they have been able to sign all three to new contract extensions, without bankrupting the club.
