Martino suspended for one match

Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino has been suspended for one game following his sending-off in last weekend’s 3-1 defeat at Real Sociedad.

Martino was sent to the stands at half-time in that match at Anoeta, having reportedly called La Real assistant coach Txema Lumbreras a ‘pelotudo’ [Argentine slang for idiot] during a heated argument between individuals from both benches.

The Blaugrana boss, whose future continues to be the subject of speculation in the Catalan press, will now miss Sunday evening’s Primera Division clash with Almeria at the Camp Nou.

Barca confirmed the news in a club statement released Wednesday lunchtime, adding that the decision would not be appealed.

“Gerardo Martino will not be allowed to sit on the bench, at the Camp Nou, this Sunday, for the game against Almeria as he has been suspended for one match by the Competition Committee,” the statement said.

“It’s worth remembering that the Argentinian coach was sent off at the half-time break in the league match against Real Sociedad, in Anoeta. FC Barcelona will not appeal the ban to the Appeals Committee.”

Martino’s assistant coach Jorge Pautasso will therefore take charge of Sunday’s game, which is to be played just hours after La Liga leaders Real Madrid play at third-placed Atletico Madrid.
