Luis Suarez confirmed he has agreed a new five-year contract with Barcelona and then admitted:
‘the happiness will be complete if Leo [Messi] renews too’.
The deal that will be signed on Friday lunchtime at the Camp Nou will keep the player at the club until 2021 when he will be 34. His buy-out clause has been set at 200m euros (£167.5m)
The new contract represents a reward for Suarez’ astonishing return of 97 goals, 48 assists and eight trophies in his 116 games since signing in 2014.
It is also a statement of intent from Barcelona who have now tied-up two of their front three – leaving the biggest contract until last.
They will now sit down with Lionel Messi’s father Jorge and hope that the prospect of playing for another four years with his friends Neymar and Suarez will ensure that he puts pen to paper on a new deal too.
Speaking at an Adidas event Suarez was asked if his decision to commit would convince Messi to do likewise and he said:
‘This is not a message to him, no. He’s big enough to decide what is best for him.’
‘The club are renewing the players and that is a commitment to what we are doing.
‘We have to continue achieving things but it means they are happy with the way we are performing.
‘It makes me very happy to be where I want to be; I’m as happy as I have ever been and the happiness will be complete with the renewal of Leo [Messi].’
The Uruguay international joined the Spanish side from Liverpool in 2014 for £75m.
The former Ajax and Reds attacker collected the European Golden Shoe last season after becoming the top scorer in domestic football in Europe with 40 league goals.
