2009 La Liga Season Review: Sporting Gijon

Team Overview: Sporting Gijon have played every season of their existence in the top two divisions in Spanish football.  The club’s strongest finish in the Primera Division came in 1979.  That year the Rojiblancos finished in second place.  The 2008/2009 season marks the club’s first back in the top division since a ten year absence.  The club looks to improve on their ranking next season.

Best Performers:

F  Mate Bilic     12 Goals, 3 Assists
F  David Barral    10 Goals, 4 Assists
G  Ivan Pichu    1.56 Goals/Game

Highest High: Sporting Gijon was able to rebound from their two worst months with their two best of the season.  The club was perfect in October, winning all three of their matches by a combined score of 7-1.  May was another strong month for the club as they won three matches, tied one, and only lost one in the entire month.  The club earned nineteen points over the two month period.

Lowest Low: The Rojiblancos had the worst defense this year by a considerable amount.  The club gave up seventy-nine goals this year which is ten more then the next closest team.  The club also had a horrible start to the year dropping their first five games of the season.  Over the five match cold streak, the club conceded twenty goals.  The club would have an equally bad April losing all five of the matches in that month as well.

Future: Sporting Gijon needs to improve defensively if they want to stay in the top tier of Spanish football.  The club nearly averaged giving up two goals per game.  If it wasn’t for a few much needed hot streaks the club would have finished the year around last place.  The Rojiblancos need to revamp their D and bring in some tough defenders and perhaps even a new keeper.
