These are troubled teams in Real Madrid. The appointment of Rafa Benítez was not met with approval by large sections of Real Madrid fans.
The mouthpiece of the football club, Marca, wrote on Sunday that the firing of Benitez seems to be a foregone conclusion after the 4-0 hammering that Barcelona gave then on Saturday.
The Real Madrid board no longer have faith in the coach, who has lost the dressing room in less than three months.
The suits at the Bernabéu are well aware that the squad aren’t behind the Madrid-born manager, whatever they say in public. Benítez has no relationship to speak of with several of the big-name players, chief among them Cristiano Ronaldo.
The knives are also out for the ex-Valencia, Liverpool, Inter, Chelsea and Napoli boss among the fans, many of whom have called for the 55-year-old’s head. It looks like there is only one way things can end, sooner or later, although Benítez may well cling to the dramatic reversal of fortunes enjoyed by his ‘Clásico’ conqueror – Luis Enrique, who also appeared to be on the chopping block at one point – as a glimmer of hope.
Benitez is not the only one who future is unsure at the Bernabeu. The Madrid fans turned in club president Florentino Perez with shouts of “Florentino, resign” ringing round the Bernabeu during the defeat.
I cannot see Perez making the knee-jerk move to remove Benitez as he hand picked him to take over from Carlo Ancelotti this summer. The future of Perez and Benitez at Real Madrid are tied together and I think either they both stay, or they both go.
Do you think Rafa Benitez will survive the season at Real Madrid?
