Guardiola Expected To Extend Deal With Barca

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson is in his upper sixties meaning that soon the time to retire from the EPL will come. Ferguson has yet to set a particular date yet, but sometime in the next five years Fergie could decide to hang them up.

If and when he does it is fitting that the two men most likely to replace him are coaching rival teams in La Liga. Jose Mourinho of Real Madrid has made no secret of his love for English football and Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. The Special One has claimed that Fergie is his closest coaching friend and does put Man U on his list of places he would consider going to. It is widely reported that Mourinho is likely waiting for that position to be vacant to make the move back to England.

The other likely candidate is who other then Pep Guardiola of Barcelona. Supposedly the Barca man is Fergie’s hand-picked favorite for the job of successor, but of course like all things it will come down to what the young coach desires as well.  Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta does not believe that Guardiola will leave the club for that post and the Barcelona official hinted that the club was working on a long term extension with the coach who usually dabbles with just short-term deals.

Zubizarreta said that Fergie has “excellent taste” if the rumors are true, but the sporting director believes that Guardiola and his ties with the Spanish club will convince him to stay in Spain with the treble winners:

If Ferguson is thinking that way, he has excellent taste, but everybody knows the ties Guardiola has with Barca, which go far beyond the contract he has. We are working on a long-term project.
