Louis van Gaal had been hoping to snap the 28-year-old up to add some more muscle to his defence after the Uruguayan impressed for Diego Simone’s side. However, speaking to reporters, Godin claims he wants to stay with Atleti:
“At this point, I feel that I’m in the best time of my career and I still see my retirement very far. I would like to stay many years here (at Atletico Madrid).
“But it is true that I also have an attraction from my country and at any point in the future I would like to return to Uruguay, to respond to the love they have showed me during this years.
“But just the time will say. It is difficult to know where I will be playing in as many years.”
The Uruguayan centre-back has been a key part of the success Atletico Madrid have had over the last few seasons, which included reaching the Champions League final last season and winning La Liga.
His partnership alongside Joao Miranda has proven to be the rock for the Spanish giants at the back and played a big part in Simone’s side’s shock La Liga success and helped the side to the Champions League final clash with bitter rivals Real Madrid.
