Diego Costa has fallen on hard times at Stamford Bridge, with his form for Chelsea diving into a seemingly bottomless pit. On the back of his dire performances, rumours have been suggesting that he is nearing a West London exit.
The English newspaper The Telegraph now reports that the Blues are looking to strike a deal with frequent clients Atletico Madrid. It is thought that a swap deal is on the cards, but one that does not, this time, involve Antoine Griezmann.
It seems that the Spain international faces a hard task to turn things around in west London and could be open to a move away ASAP…Costa is rumoured to be heading back to Atletico Madrid with Jackson Martinez coming this way.
This has been a season to forget for Costa who admits showing up to preseason training overweight and his season has gone downhill from there.
Chelsea fans blamed Costa as being one of the players responsible for the firing of Jose Mourinho last week, and his name was booed during the announcement of the line-ups against Sunderland at the weekend. The forward was also negatively serenaded upon his substitution, as he headed directly down the tunnel.
Last season, Costa scored 20 goals in 26 Premier League games. This year he has netted a fraction of it so far and concerningly looks unlikely to add to his tally anytime soon.
While the managerial change and the arrival of Guus Hiddink appears to have refreshed the likes of Pedro and Oscar, Costa was terrible yet again on Saturday.
Martinez, meanwhile, is a highly-regarded player. The Colombian scored 67 league goals in 89 Porto appearances before moving to Atletico in the summer. However, he has failed to replicate that form so far, hitting the back of the net just twice in 11 La Liga games.
Furthermore, four of those appearances have come as a substitute, which is testament to the struggles that he is having in settling into Diego Simeone’s unique system.
Consequently, an opportunity may present itself to the Blues, especially given that Costa is still revered at the Vicente Calderon.
Having said that, there have been few rumours claiming that Martinez is unhappy. Players often take a few months to get used to Simeone’s demands and, as in the case of Griezmann, they inevitably blossom. With Atletico fighting on all three fronts for very realistic silverware, there is little reason to switch at this point.
Would you trade Diego Costa For Jackson Martinez?
