The recent departure of Atletico Madrid’s highly-rated youngster Alvaro Dominguez to Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach had the defender lashing out at the club for “never having faith on homegrown talent”.
De Gea himself was a product of the Atletico academy but was sold to Manchester United for £17 million last season and agrees that his former club should have made more of the talents coming out of their youth academy.
“You should never let youth players go. I don’t know what happened with Domínguez, but it is much better to build your team from reserve team members,” De Gea told Marca, “You don’t spend so much money, and you’ve got people who will give their all to play in the club shirt”
“Look at Athletic, with their boys from the youth team, who fight and give it all they’ve got; they’ve had a terrific year”, he added.
