Several English publications have written stories in the last week that FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi wanted to move to the Premier League, claims that FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Batomeu called embarrassing.
“People who say Messi is leaving Barcelona should be embarrassed. Messi is recovering for the Madrid-Barcelona game. He is hoping to play El Clasico, but injuries have their process” said Batomeu.
“Leo and his father said they don’t imagine playing at another club. The relationship with the family is very good. We are not in the negotiation phase yet, when the time comes it will be presented. He has a contract for the next three seasons.”
Bartomeu, though, admitted that the Barcelona superstar isn’t at ease with the Spanish taxation, which has further added fuel to the fire.
“Messi is very angry about the Spanish taxation. It is not normal, the information published on Leo Messi. If his tax advisers have made a mistake they have to pay like everyone else. Messi deserves respect as all do.”
I still struggle to see why Messi would leave Barcelona, the only club he has ever played for, and move to the Premier League. The only reasons I can think of is that he wants a new challenge after winning everything in Spain multiple times, and/or he really is upset at what he calls a witch hunt by the Spanish tax authorities.
The new TV contract will give the Premier League clubs the financial capacity to afford Messi’s €250m buyout clause and his expected £500,000-a-week in wages. The question is whether money will be enough to make the best player in the world leave the only professional environment he has ever known.
Do you think Messi will ever leave Barca for the Premier League?
