Lionel Messi scored his 21st and 22nd goals of the season in Barcelona’s 3-0 win over bottom club Osasuna. To put that figure into perspective, it’s nine more than his team-mate Luis Suarez, who also scored in the 3-0 victory, and ten more than Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Messi show began in the first half with a sensational pass that put Suarez through. It continued with him assisting Suarez to get the first goal and culminated in him netting the second and the third.
A relieved Suarez said:
‘We were aware that we had a lot of chances in the first half and we couldn’t take them but we just kept going and this result gives us a boost.’
He broke the deadlock on the hour after a fine move that was started by Sergio Busquets and continued by Messi. The Argentine dribbled across the face of Osasuna’s area and got Jordi Alba in behind the defence. The full-back crossed for the Uruguayan who was unmarked and just had to nudge the ball into an empty net to get his 10th league goal of the season.
Suarez had a quick look back at the linesman before wheeling away in celebration. It had been a tight call but he had correctly been given the benefit of the doubt. With 97 goals Suarez is only three off his century in just 116 games.
When Barca doubled their lead it was vintage passing football with a move starting at right back with Sergi Roberto feeding Busquets. He played in Messi, who found substitute Denis Suarez. Denis was overlapped by Jordi Alba who crossed for Messi to score. It was his 16th goal in nine games against Osasuna and it would be 17 before the final whistle.
