The Barca superstar has been given extra time to recover from football’s global showpiece, even though Argentina were knocked out on June 30.
Also missing out on the USA tour will be Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, Samuel Umtiti, Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho, Ousmane Dembele and Ivan Rakitic.
That means Barca will have an inexperienced team for the three matches in the States, with the likes of Sergi Samper, Munir and Marlon making the traveling party.
Germany international goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen will sit out an opening clash with Tottenham on Saturday, but will join up with the squad in Dallas for a meeting with Roma on July 31.
Ernesto Valverde’s side will play three friendlies lined up during the 12 days of their summer stage in the US – all of the games are part of this year’s International Champions Cup tournament.
The La Liga champions will play their first friendly of the summer against Tottenham Hotspur in Pasadena, LA on Thursday 28 July. Three days later, the team will face Roma at the AT and T stadium in Dallas before bringing the US tour to a close with a friendly against AC Milan at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
