When you have the best attacking trio in football, not many players are content to play backup to Messi, Neymar and Suarez. And that is the problem that Barcelona are facing just a week before the Supercopa de Espana kicks off.
Luis Enrique made finding a backup for MSN a priority this off-season, but Barca have been unable to find a quality forward that is willing to take on a reserve role.
Recently, the Spanish champions lost two potential targets in one swoop last week, when Kevin Gameiro and Luciano Vietto swapped teams. The Argentine seemed to be heading to the Camp Nou at the end of July, as did Gabriel Jesus, who instead chose Pep Guardiola and Manchester City.
Gabriel Barbosa could still join the La Liga champions, but Barca will have a hard time matching the offers that Inter and Juventus have made for the teenage striker.
With time running out, director Raul Sanllehi and technical director Roberto Fernandez are now working further down their list of potential targets. A list that includes the likes of Mario Gomez is on the list along with Deportivo La Coruna’s Lucas Perez and Salzburg’s Jonathan Soriano.
The solution for Barcelona might be right under their noses however as 20-year-old Munir El Haddadi was outstanding against Premier League champions Leicester City on Wednesday night, scoring twice and showing a great understanding with both Messi and Suarez.
“I have a lot of confidence in Munir and he also scored goals last season,” explained Luis Enrique , per Sport.
“He is a young footballer, he has a long path in front of him yet, but he also has a willingness to work, and he always adds something.”
After so many weeks of struggles in the transfer market, why would Barcelona, a club built on bringing through players from its academy, not use Munir as their fourth option? It didn’t work too badly last year, when he stepped in on various occasions, mainly for Neymar.
