Atleti boss Diego Simeone knows that he needs goals if his side are to keep up the pressure on leaders Barcelona and El Cholo believes that Diego Costa has the calibre to keep the rojiblanco title challenge alive.
The last meeting was last Thursday and Simeone repeated his wish: “I want Costa back”. Atlético, through agent Jorge Mendes, communicated the offer to Chelsea but Abramovich’s club has replied that they are not willing to sell their best striker, who has begun firing again with the departure of Mourinho.
In the beginning of the negotiations, a Jackson Martínez-Costa swap deal plus cash was discussed and Mendes then brought the €45M offer to Chelsea on Thursday.
That Simeone is looking to sign a striker this late in the transfer window just demonstrate his lack of belief in his current strikers. Neither Jackson, Torres or Vietto started against Barcelona and itlooks like that’s who Simeone will have to work with until the end of the season.
Costa endured a miserable start to the season for Chelsea but has returned to form since the departure of Jose Mourinho, scoring six goals in his last six games since Guus Hiddink was hired in December.
Atleti boss Diego Simeone replaced Costa with Jackson Martinez from Porto, but the Colombia forward has been a major disappointment scoring just three goals in 22 appearances.
Costa’s role in the firing of Jose Mourinho has lost a sizeable portion of the Chelsea fan base and a similar offer from Atleti in the summer foe their former hitman could be enough to persuade Chelsea to let him go,
But that does not help rojiblanco this season who are still chasing domestic and European glory.
