The Spanish league usually bends over backwards to help Spanish teams in Europe which is why this announcement of the dates and kick-off times of the matches corresponding to La Liga game week 25, in which Atlético Madrid will play Villarreal at Vicente Calderón Stadium.
The league announced that Diego Simeone’s side will play Villarreal at the last possible opportunity – on Sunday 21st February at 20:30. This hasn’t gone down well at all given that Atletico will face PSV in the first leg of their Champions League tie only three days later, which will mean they will have to make their way to Eindhoven on Tuesday 23rd February.
The league match against Villarreal couldn’t be held on the Saturday because the Yellow Submarine have to play their Europa League clash against Napoli on Thursday 18th February, but the Madrid club feels the game could have been played at an earlier time on Sunday, thereby giving the players valuable rest before their own European tie.
The next fixture to be announced will be the Madrid derby at the Santiago Bernabéu and Atlético sincerely hope that, having played the Dutch team in Eindhoven on the previous Wednesday, they won’t have to face their local rivals on Saturday 27th February.
