2009 La Liga Season Review: Real Zaragoza

Team Overview: Founded in 1932, Real Zaragoza has played the majority of their seasons in the top tier of Spanish football.  In fact the Blanquillos have played 54 seasons in La Liga, but are still searching for their first top level championship.  The club has also won six Copa Del Rey trophies with the most recent coming in 2003/2004.  Since 1997 the club has only played two seasons outside of the Primera Division and both seasons the club was granted a quick promotion back to the biggest league in Spain.

Top Performers:

M   Ewerthon 28 Goals

F   Javier Arizmendi 9 Goals, 3 Assists

G   Javier Lopez Vallejo 1.17 Goals/Game

Highest Highs:  Real Zaragoza was among the best squads in the Segunda Division this season.  The club only suffered the second fewest losses on the year (7) and also had one of the strongest goal differentials of the season.  Zaragoza also shared a joint-lead for home wins and were only one back from a joint-lead for the most wins total.  Most impressive the club only lost one match at home all season.

Lowest Lows: Real Zaragoza was great at home this year, but the club needs to improve on the road if they want to be successful next season.  The club barely had a winning record on the road winning eight matches, losing six, with seven draws.  The result was not terrible, but can easily be improved on next season.

Future: Real Zaragoza know all about success on the top tier.  The club plans on staying in La Liga for good this upcoming season.  The club has already made one significant upgrade, midfielder Jermaine Pennant.  Pennant, an Englishman, looks to play significantly more next season for Zaragoza then he did the previous year for Liverpool.
