Cruz-ing to Valencia?

by Will Salvarinas on June 27, 2010

Although much of the transfer talk within La Liga has been concentrated among soccer giants Real Madrid, and Barcelona, there now appears to be movement from the lesser teams of Spain’s top division.

Valencia, who finished an impressive third place, yet still a staggering 28 points behind league winners Barcelona, have their sights set on Roque Santa Cruz from Manchester City.

Santa Cruz is currently immersed in heated action in this year’s World Cup in South Africa, where his skills have been on display for an upstart Paraguay side. Although he hasn’t been at his best in the early stages of action, he remains a vital component to their overall team success, and will be counted upon to provide clutch goals as the hope to progress through the knockout stage.

La Liga Review – Valencia Win Again

by David Wilson on September 29, 2008

Valencia joined Villarreal at the top of the Primera Liga on Sunday after coming from behind to crush Deportivo La Coruna 4-2 in an entertaining game at the Mestalla.

Goals from David Villa (two), Juan Mata and Joaquin did the damage for Los Che after Emiliano Moretti had gifted the visitors an early lead with an own goal.

A late strike from Angel Lafita then gave the scoreline a slightly flattering look for Deportivo.

Luis Fabiano’s brilliant free-kick earned Sevilla a deserved 1-0 win from their trip to fellow high-flyers Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid claim Supercup

by David Wilson on August 25, 2008

A nine-man Real Madrid rallied to beat Valencia 4-2 and lift the Spanish Supercup 6-5 on aggregate on Sunday. Ruud van Nistelrooy, Sergio Ramos, Ruben De La Red and Gonzalo Higuain scored for Madrid, which had midfielder Rafael van der Vaart ejected in the 39th minute and striker Ruud van Nistelrooy in the 73rd.

Valencia’s David Silva opened the scoring, with Fernando Morientes completing a late goal rush at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

It was the eighth time Madrid won the trophy — contested annually by the league champion and Copa del Rey winner — and the first since 2003.
