The Wales international has been left out of the matchday squad after suffering a muscle injury and is also a slight doubt for the Champions League clash with Manchester City.
Bale scored his 16th La Liga goal of the season in Saturday’s 5-1 battering of Getafe but it came at a price.
Zinedine Zidane confirmed to the press that Bale will sit out the crucial Villarreal clash but hopes to have the winger back soon.
He said: ‘He has suffered from something this weekend. He is not with us [against Villarreal]. We hope at the moment that it is just an overloaded muscle.
‘I hope he will be back with us for the next game.’
Full back Dani Carvajal is also absent, as Zidane looks at other options in his squad, with Danilo poised to start.
Bale’s team-mates, however, were put through their paces by Zidane and his coaching staff, with their hopes of winning the La Liga title significantly boosted in recent weeks.
One point separates the top three, who all play on Wednesday, as the title race looks set to go down to the wire.
Barcelona face an away trip to Deportivo La Coruna, while Diego Simeone’s men travel to Basque-country to face Athletic Bilbao; who bounced back from their Europa League defeat to beat Malaga at the weekend.
