Atletico Madrid have signed Kevin Gameiro from Sevilla for a reported €32 million rising to €40m with add-ons and the 29-year-old striker has signed a four-year contract with the Champions League runners-up/
The France international striker surprisingly not part of Les Bleus’ Euro 2016 squad despite another impressive season with Sevilla, in which he won the Europa League for a third consecutive season. In his three campaigns for Sevilla, Gameiro scored 67 goals and assisted a further 17.
Atleti had been linked with former striker Diego Costa all summer but decided at the last moment to sign Gameiro instead. as a partner for Antoine Griezmann.
Gameiro was officially unveiled in Madrid on Sunday.
“The most important thing is that I am the one here speaking in front of you,” said Gameiro when asked about whether his signing prevented the club from adding Costa. “The club chose me and I am going to give them everything I have.”
Gameiro said he had other offers, but his first choice was to play under coach Diego Simeone.
“He’s demonstrated that he wants me in the squad and is aware of what I can offer. I’m quick around the area and will work will with him. We plan to sit down and talk after they return from Australia, he said. “I like his attitude, he wants to win every game and has a winning mentality which I like a great deal.
“In my mind I was set on joining Atletico and confident of good times ahead. I’ve penned a four year deal and am optimistic about the future.
“I’m really looking forward to the season ahead. This is a great club and can’t wait for the season ahead challenging for the league title and Champions League and I’d love to win a trophy.”
